As the public continues to voice their discontent over some of the biggest news stories to shake the states last year, lawmakers across the country are moving quickly to introduce bills that would place more scrutiny on interactions between law enforcement officers and the public. The newly proposed legislation is aimed at addressing concerns about how racial prejudice and injustice are impacting police tactics and conduct.
As can be expected, the debate is strongest in Missouri and New York where last year police officers shot two black men in separate incidents. In Missouri, lawmakers have filed more than 40 separate bills in the wake of the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black 18-year-old, by a Ferguson officer. New York city is also expected to see a number of legislative efforts centered on resolving public contention of how police treat civil unrest and minorities, following the in-custody death of Eric Garner and the subsequent shootings of two officers.
Lawmakers in at least a dozen states are turning to technology and better equipment, such as wearable body cameras, in an attempt to monitor police activity in the field and with citizens. Many law enforcement officers and legislators agree that using wearable cameras affixed to an officer’s uniform can help dissolve disputes about how officers are responding and why. Other proposed legislation seeks to require more training for officers, impose tighter limits on the use of deadly force and enforce harsher penalties. Some are even calling for the appointment of a special investigative staff that would evaluate incidents where police cause fatalities.
